- According to the official statistics, China has about 153 million people over the age of 60. Besides, the population of disabled people in China has reached 83 million.
- The Chinese government has put forward the goal that by the end of 2015 every disabled person can enjoy the service for rehabilitation, in which assistive equipment and device will play an important role.
- It is estimated that the amount of consumption by the aged population will be over 1.4 trillion by 2010. This figure will increase to 4.3 trillion by 2020, and to 13 trillion by the end of 2030.
- By the end of 2008, Shanghai has 582 elderly nursing institutions with 80554 bed space, 80 elderly medical institutions, including hospitals and nursing homes for the elderly, and about 41.3 thousand family beds for the seniors over 60.
- In 2009, the Shanghai municipal government will provide assistance to 210,000 old people living at home and add 10,000 new bed space.
- With the organization of World EXPO 2010, the Shanghai government is pushing forward a scheme which allows barrier-free facilities into families of the disabled and the elderly people.
- In 2010, Shanghai will accomplish the assessment of the rehabilitation service project in 19 districts and counties, constructing 40 model sub-districts (villages and towns) and 171 qualified sub-districts (villages and towns) in terms of the rehabilitation service for the disabled.
- Shanghai will set up rehabilitation rooms for disabled people in all the sub-districts (villages and towns) community sanitary service centers, and upgrade 947 disable rehabilitation centers in communities with disabled people.
