There is a large amount of old or disabled people in China. In 2005, China has more than 100 million people over the age of 65, which is about 7.7% of the total population. This number is growing at the rate of 3% - 4% every year. China has entered the aging society very rapidly. In addition, related data show that the number of disabled people of all categories in China totals over 60 million, up to 5% of the total population.

The Chinese government is giving top priority to both the old and disabled people. In Shanghai alone, there are 2.6 million people aged over 60 years old, 439 elderly care centers and 40,136 beds. The policy of “Family living and community supporting of the old age” has been popularized. The city of Shanghai devotes more effort on developing the charity foundations. The annual growth rate of facilities for the elderly and the disabled has reached 40% such as adding 10,000 new beds every year, promoting the construction of barrier-free facilities in both public and private spaces.

With the rapid economic growth in China, the living standard of the general public and the quality of nations’ spiritual life as a whole has been considerably improved. The total amount of consumption by the elderly and the disabled has been on significant increase. The consumption level by the elderly has witnessed a steady increase, up to $7 billion every year. The potential of the market has attracted growing interest of the investors from around the world.
